Fundamentals Description (5 & 6 years old)
The Fundamentals Program for 5 and 6 year olds emphasizes high a participation-low skill approach. Players are introduced to, and encouraged to develop, the basic skills of lacrosse. This includes passing, catching, cradling, checking, and absorbing contact. The basic skills are introduced in individual and small group activities, then progress to low competitive mini-game situations. Skill development and lacrosse enjoyment remains the goal of the program.
Because the players are going to be introduced to contact, full lacrosse equipment is required. The equipment, particularly the arms guards, must be fitted properly. The equipment includes helmet, mask, gloves, elbow/arm pads, shoulder pads, and kidney pads.
At this age level, the players can participate without their parent(s) on the floor. Occasionally if a player needs some parent support on the floor that accommodation can be made.
In the program the players use a regulation size, but lightweight safety lacrosse ball.
If a parent is looking for a competitive program for their child, it is recommended they apply for the Paperweight Rep program, rather than the Fundamentals Program.
